How graduates can land their first IT job

While it’s a relief when you finally graduate, sometimes this is where the real difficulty of job-hunting begins. In fact, many people find that landing your first IT job isn’t easy, given that hundreds and thousands of other fresh graduates are competing for similar positions. That said, getting a job may be easier for you than for other graduates if you prepare yourself for the path that lies ahead.

In 2020, computing and IT has one of the highest skill shortages in the world, with a deficit of ratio almost 5:1 job openings to qualified graduates available.

1. Understand your strengths and capability to learn

There are several jobs that you can apply for; you must know what you are good at, whether to be a coder, data specialist, product manager, etc. It is the first step to be able to get a job opportunity where you can outshine. Express your particular IT interests and skills in the interview to be able to alert the hiring manager of your passion so that they are aware of how you best fit for them. For instance, If you have an analytical mind, make sure to be noticed with clear examples when giving an interview.

2. Showcase your work and knowledge

Make sure you are preparing to put your best foot forward by exhibiting them with your work, along with your vast knowledge about the position you applied. A portfolio website, hackathon achievements or list of works on Github will speak volumes as to the achievements and projects you’ve made.

For example, If you are applying as a tech expert, you must know the similar skill set and knowledge necessary to troubleshoot computers, servers, internet connection, etc. If you have a skill set that revolves around data security, it should showcase in the interview and on your resume, as most enterprises are now focusing their attention on it.

3. Build relevant experience

Knowledge? Check. Skills? Check. But what about experience?

The best way for you to improve your chances of getting hired by gaining practical experience in your discipline is through internships; it will serve as your stepping stones to full-time employment. Virtual internships are now very popular, as are volunteer technical project works with local agencies and small startups. Likewise, if you have any summer assignments or projects, you should showcase them proudly. 

4. Compete in a hackathon

Events like Hackathons, in which several computer programmers and other professionals involved in software development, including, others collaborate intensively on software projects. The biggest hackathons are always sponsored by huge software and data-based companies, who are looking for products to acquire, ideas to learn from and of course- talent to scout. Not to mention the sweet certificate, networks and portfolio you can build from it!

Search for programs with hands-on practical knowledge to learn and qualify for a job in IT as it trains you in real-world situations. If you aren’t able to get an internship, then do participate in various IT events, it will create a strong portfolio which helps you in bestowing relevant skills and your expertise to employers. 

Graduating from a full-time course or even a diploma isn’t enough for you to fortuitously land your dream job after college. Even if your degree has a high conversion rate in terms of full-employment, many recruiting managers are still scanning for other skills to select the best applicant for them.
